Ground and Water Resources

The ground water resources of Alaminos are found to be of generally poor conditions. Although water extracted is potable, quality and supply are problems inherent to the ground water source. Accordingly, water is said to be scarce if not totally unavailable during dry season. In Barangay San Andres, informants report that in certain areas, a total of 20 pipes are needed to be drilled into the ground before water is reached. The problem of saline intrussion into the ground water may result from over extraction and the concomminant lowering in level of the water table. The mere fact that the Alaminos Water District is unable to supply sufficient potable water to the entire municipality is also an indication of the generally poor status of the ground water resource.
The presence of numerous agro-industrial firms can induce ground water contamination in years to come. Indirectly animal excrement (e.g. chicken dung), specially when wet can readily be imbibed in the soil. Scientific findings showed that animal waste carries with it a considerable amount of Ammonium (NH4) and Nitrate (NO3). In addition, the Nata de Coco industry can also be considered as possible source of ground water contaminants since the liquid wastes are thrown untreated directly to the ground.
